SOMERTON SPRINGS SWIM CLUB SWIM LESSONS
The goal of our swim lesson program is to assist your child to learn how to be safe in and around water. We will teach your child an array of swimming and safety skills as well as instill a love for the sport of swimming. The Somerton Springs Swim lesson program has six levels. Children will begin at the level that is most appropriate for them according to the standards that we set forth. Testing and level placement is at the discretion of the manager and head swim lesson instructor. The first three levels of our program work on the fundamentals of being safe in the water and help prepare your child to learn the different swimming strokes. Levels 4 through 6 focus more on stroke technique. Please remember that proficient swimming is taught in an organized progression. A child must learn the basics before they are able to begin learning stroke technique, and they must learn basic stroke technique before they are able to become proficient at each stroke. Remember, we all crawled before we learned to walk!
LEVEL 1: "STARFISH": INTRODUCTION TO WATER SKILLS:
Introduces basic aquatic skills. Participants begin to form positive attitudes, effective swimming habits, and safe practices in and around the water.
LEVEL 2: "SEA HORSE": FUNDAMENTAL AQUATIC SKILLS:
This level marks the beginning of locomotion skills in the water. Participants will learn to glide and float without support and recover to a vertical position. They will work on developing simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on their front and back, which will lay the foundation for future stroke.
LEVEL 3: "GUPPY": STROKE DEVELOPMENT:
Improve proficiency on previously learned skills. Learn and practice survival floating and learn to swim front crawl and elementary backstroke at an elementary level. They will be introduced to the scissor and dolphin kick and extend the time duration for treading water.
LEVEL 4: "MINNOW": STROKE IMPROVEMENT:
Improve aquatic skills and increase endurance by swimming the strokes learned in level 3 for greater distances and with more proficiency. They will add arm actions to the previously learned scissor kick and breast stroke kick to perform rudimentary level side stroke and breast stroke. They will begin to learn the back crawl and butterfly as well as learning to perform an open turn at a wall.
LEVEL 5: "DOLPHIN": STROKE REFINEMENT:
Participants will work on refining technique for all six strokes front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke. They will improve endurance by increasing the distance they swim. They will also learn flip turns on the front and back.
LEVEL 6: "STING RAY": SWIMMING & SKILL PROFICIENCY:
The purpose of this level is to refine strokes so that participants can swim with greater efficiency and for longer distances.
